Winnipeg, the capital of Manitoba, is the geographical centre of North America. Downtown Winnipeg is a vibrant, developing, mixed-use community that serves as the economic, cultural, and entertainment heart of the city.
The downtown core is home to some of the city’s most exciting entertainment destinations, including Portage Place’s own Entertainment Level. Visitors and residents also flock to downtown to see the hockey, concerts, and special events at one of the top fifteen busiest concert venues in the world – the MTS Centre, which is conveniently connected to Portage Place via the skywalk system. Downtown Winnipeg also includes a variety of dining, night club, theatre, and music venues that keep downtown alive well into the night.
There are 72,000 office workers in downtown Winnipeg, which is home to the head offices of several national and multi-national corporations. Many of these office buildings, including the newly built headquarters for Manitoba Hydro, are connected via the downtown skywalk network, which links up to Portage Place from all directions. The city’s downtown office worker community greatly contributes to the bustling atmosphere and traffic experienced throughout the day.
Downtown is one of Winnipeg’s fastest-growing neighbourhoods, thanks to a number of innovative condo development projects. With over 16,000 residents at present, the downtown population is expected to grow by 1.9% to 2.4% per year over the next decade. Winnipeggers who choose to live downtown enjoy the benefits of being able to walk to work, have entertainment and shopping at their doorstep, and reside in some of the city’s most unique housing units.
There are over 14 educational institutions in the downtown core that see 40,000 students pass through their doors on an annual basis. The University of Winnipeg, home to over 15,000 students, is located just one block away from Portage Place, and is quickly taking over downtown with an expanded urban campus. These students are an integral part of the downtown community.
The Downtown Winnipeg BIZ is the primary organization dedicated to making changes, generating interest, and hosting events in the downtown area. Portage Place and the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ share a special partnership on recurring events including the Our for Lunch and Out on the Avenue concert series, Chess in the Court, and Young Artists on the Avenue.
